DAY 10 - 03.06.18

We really needed today after a couple of not so great days. It's so true that a stay in the NICU is a complete roller coaster. So full of ups and downs, the ups are really great and the downs are incredibly hard. When we went for our visit tonight Klay asked the nurse when we would be able to do kangaroo care (skin to skin). To our surprise she told us that we could do it tonight! We got the camera out real quick and of course the battery was almost dead... what luck. Prayers were answered and the camera stayed alive long enough to get plenty of pictures and sweet videos of me holding my little girl, really holding her, for the first time.

The nurse had to call over another nurse to help transfer her from her isolette to me. They had a lot of wires and tubes to keep track of and keep connected while I was holding her. We also had to be very careful with her head since the blood vessels in her head are so fragile. She's got the sweetest brunette hair and cutest little blonde eyebrows and little ears. I was able to hold her for 30 minutes and then we had to put her and all her wires back in the incubator.

It was one of the happiest moments of my life! I got to feel her breathe, to feel her little legs wiggle around, to feel her open and close her tiny fingers against my chest...it was amazing to say the least. In addition to being very sweet, kangaroo care also has a ton of health benefits! It helps regulate hormones, temperature, and vital signs for the baby and for mom it helps with milk production.

They were finally able to do her footprints and handprints today. They put all the NICU babies footprints on a clover since it's March and Izzy's are the smallest ones! Shes got the cutest little toes.

It really is true that once they are here you can't imagine life without them. Earlier today Klay and I were going through old pictures and videos on my phone. We seem so happy in all of them! But when I think of little Izzy, I don't know how I ever had a smile on my face without her. She is our whole world!
